Explorers are the fourth section of the Scouting movement, providing Scouting for all Young People aged 14 to 18.

At Explorers we want to further develop all the different skills learnt in younger Scouting sections, along with giving our Explorers as many opportunities as possible to try new activities, and learn new capabilities. Examples of some of the activities we have done in the last year or so are: Scuba Diving, Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Hiking, Orienteering, DIY skills, Expedition Cooking, Survival skills, Skiing, High Ropes…the list goes on and on!!

We also aim to give young people the opportunity to achieve the highest Scouting awards for young people: Platinum Award and the Queen’s Scout Award. These align closely with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, which is also offered as part of our Explorer activities.

Recently Explorers in Stockton have completed their Silver and Gold Award expeditions, both taking part in County run expeditions to the Pyrenees, and locally in the Peak District and Scotland. To find out more about their recent adventures take a look at their blog using the link to the left of this page.

Young Leaders
In Stockton & Thornaby District we also encourage our Explorers to take part in the Young Leader Scheme. This allows Explorers to help in the younger sections within our District, and for many is the starting process to become Scouting Leaders at 18. Many of our Explorers find this very satisfying, they help to develop our younger scouts, as well as developing leadership traits in themselves by taking on responsibilities within their sections. Our District provides all the training required and supports young people the whole way through the scheme.

We are always keen to hear from people wishing to join Explorers, and if any the above sounds interesting, or you have any questions please contact us by emailing desc@stocktonthornabydistrictscouts.com
